The Scoop on ATC's - Artist Trading Cards

Created by Kathy Rossiter

I've been doing a lot of research on the ATC (Artist Trading Card) and I wanted to share with you all about these interesting pieces of art!

On the WTCA am radio 1050 website I found the following excerpt: "Artist Trading Cards (ATC’s) are miniature works of art on card stock. They are self produced and anyone can make them. Artist Trading Cards are not to be sold. They can be found in every medium and style. Artistic trading cards date back to the 16th century and were mostly portraits. They were the first wallet photos. French artists were the first to use these cards as advertisements; however, in the 1800s their popularity blossomed in the hands of the English. By that time, the impressionists were doing miniature works of art which they traded among themselves in order to study each others different styles. By the 1960’s card sizes were standardized. The cards traded today are 2.5x3.5."
